The Maude Shapiro Papers consist of correspondence regarding various departments of the City of Toledo, including the Health, Law, Safety, and Service Departments. Other materials in the collection pertain to community development, housing, revenue sharing, urban renewal projects, and daily reading files as well as event invitations received by Shapiro.

Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open for research. Materials may be accessed by request at the Ward M. Canaday Center for Special Collections on the fifth floor of the William S. Carlson Library on the main campus of the University of Toledo. Materials do not circulate.

Biographical / Historical

Maude H. Shapiro served in various education-related roles prior to serving on Toledo City Council. She was president of the Ohio Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc. (1963-1965). From 1965-1969, she was a member of the Toledo Board of Education; during this time, she also served as president of the Board from 1967-1968. Immediately prior to being elected to City Council, she was a member of the Advisory Committee to the State Board of Education on Teacher Education and Certification.

She won her first term as a council member in 1969 and was re-elected in 1971. In June of 1973, she announced that she would not seek a third term.
